Where do emoticons come from?

Have you ever wondered who invented them? Who had this great ideea of using mixed characters to express emotional feelings?
Well according to wikipedia's Emoticon article Scott Fahlman is credited for this invention, see his plea for the cause:

Recently though...NY Times published a new discovery https://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/01/19/hfo-emoticon/ dating back to 1862. Now they are going to do all kinds of research and debates about when and who actually invented the emoticons :roll:.Hurray!
